What is Ninjutsu and Bujinkan Budo?

What is ninjutsu?

忍術

Many martial arts schools use the expression "Ninjutsu" for there practise. Even some obscure groups, that crawl in carmouflage around the woods, use the name "Ninjutsu" instead of "survival".

To make sure, what you are actually dealing with, you need the exact name of a school or style. Of all old japanese schools only three are still alive. All of these are part of Bujinkan Budo. Any other school is either a new creation, a revival, or founded by one of Soke (jap. head of the family) Hatsumis students (e.g. Tanemura, Manaka), who left him.

There is a grading-sceme for ninjutsu in the "Hessisches Dan-Kollegium e.V." (HDK, hessian dan-association). In order to state, that this is neither made nor approved by the Bujinkan Dojo Hombu, the grading-sceme uses the term "ninjutsu".

The word "Ninjutsu" consists of two parts:
"Nin" is "patience" or "persistence" and
"Jutsu" is "technique" in the sense of "ability".
The best way to translate "Ninjutsu" is "survival-technique".
Sometimes you also my find the expression "Ninjitsu". This is just another way to pronounce and has still got the same meaning.

What is Bujinkan Budo?

武神館武道體術

A definition of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is nearly impossible, because this martial art has not got a fixed form like the "Do"-arts. Moreover this martial art changes every moment through time and especially since 1992. Nine old schools (japan. Ryu) join in the Bujinkan in the person of Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. These schools were founded from the 12th through 17th centuary.

The names of this schools are:

  • Shindenfudo-ryu
  • Gyokko-ryu
  • Togakure-ryu
  • Kukishinden-ryu
  • Koto-ryu
  • Kumogakure-ryu
  • Takagiyoshin-ryu
  • Gikan-ryu
  • Gyokushin-ryu

Only three of them (Togakure-ryu, Kumogakure-ryu und Gyokushin-ryu) are Ninjutsu-Ryu. Because of that, the name "Ninjutsu" does not describe the complete content of Bujinkan Budo. Therefore you find the word "Budo" ("way of war") instead of "Ninpo" in "Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu". Until about 1995 the name "Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu" was used.
The word "Taijutsu" consists of two parts: "body" and "technique".
The word "Bujinkan" consists of three parts: "Bu" means "war" or "fight", "Shin" means "god" and "Kan" means "house" in the sense of "family". The english language demands a certain relation between these words. At the moment I tend to to the following interpretation: "house of the divine warrior".

Body-motions are natural in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. Since every human is built in a different way and has got his or her own mentality, the movements of Bujinkan Budo look different with each person. But this is only true when the individual has learnt enough to develope his or her own movement. Beforehand he or she copies the movements of his or her teacher.
